February 20th-23rd

Greetings 1A Families,

We have had a wonderful third quarter and I can't believe it is almost over. I wanted to send out a special thank you to all the families that have contribute popcorn, candy, games, paper, and such. These donations mean a great deal to us and your generosity is appreciated.

We continue to press forward into our rich curriculum. Our spelling words are becoming more challenging, math is increasing in rigor, and a push to more refined writing is now our focus. Our scholars have grown so much in the last few months and many are up for challenges and find great joy in their learning.

The great successes in our classroom are truly a team effort. Without each piece playing its part, the forward growth would not nearly be as potent in momentum. It is with the partnership of all; student, teacher, and parent that we come to this marker in the journey. I encourage each family to continue all efforts in your support of your child. It is the routine, the consistency, the accountability, and the knowing that each spelling word practiced, each word read on the page, each mathematical algorithm discovered, is the fuel that lights the fire of wonder and discovery and the foundation of life-long learning.

Thank you for all that you do!

MATH:
This week we are starting our multiplication unit.  A  "Friendly Notes" information page will be sent home in your child's red homework folder on Wednesday.  Please keep it for your records and use it as a resource when helping your child with homework.

POETRY:
The new poem we are studying is "Bird Talk" by Aileen Fisher.  Each student has their Harp and Laurel Wreath poetry book in their desk.  The students enjoy finding and reading poems they have already recited, practicing the current poem, and looking at poems them may be reading in the future.

SCIENCE:
Habitats - We have studied the Arctic and the Sonoran Desert so far. This week we are focusing on the Grasslands. We are also studying the food chain and the difference between carnivore, herbivore, and omnivore.
